Mark Atherton

Mark is the Lead Officer for the `Green City Region’ priority of the Greater Manchester Strategy and is responsible for the development of the Greater Manchester 5 Year Environment Plan and its associated strategies, research, investments, projects and programmes.
He is responsible for the delivery of the plan through the GM Green City Region Board and Partnership and for convening Greater Manchester’s `Mission Based Approach’ to achieving carbon neutrality by 2038.  He is the Lead Director for the GMCA’s Climate Emergency declaration activities.
Leading the GMCA Environment Directorate, he is responsible for the delivery of policy, research, investment and delivery projects on the topics: climate change, smart renewable energy, low carbon buildings, natural capital and sustainable consumption/production and waste. He also work closely with TfGM on air quality and low carbon transport issues and with Manchester Growth Co on business support for a sustainable, circular and low carbon economy.
